‘Gold’ a sports-drama Bollywood film has broken the shackles to become the Saudi Arabia’s golden opportunity, as it becomes the first Bollywood film to be released in Saudi Arabia. The decision to release the film comes just a few months after women were allowed to enter the movie halls.
The film stars Bollywood’s sensation, Akshay Kumar, and the story lineof the motion picture revolves around India’s first Olympic gold, earned by its national hockey team at the 1948 summer Olympics in London.
The Hindi-language film earned roughly Rs.25.25 crore ($4.76 million) as it hit the theaters on the opening day in India in mid-August. The blockbuster has now earned over 100 Crore and is the third highest grossing Bollywood film of 2018.
Akshay Kumar, expressing his happiness on the release of Gold in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia tweeted “Happy to share, #Gold is the first ever Bollywood movie to release in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in Cinemas from today!” the star tweeted on Sunday.
The movie’s debut in Saudi Arabia, also tries to overlook how the kingdom is trying to reciprocate the ideas of its western allies in its ode to matching steps with them. The movies break into the market of 30 million people is expected to generate good amount of revenue. Besides, the cinema chains are also excited with the new reform and are now trying to obtain good market share.
The country has pledged to invest $64 billion in its entertainment sector over the next decade, and is thus luring investors. Even recently on August 30, Saudi Arabia announced that it has now officially granted its fourth licence to Lux Entertainment to operate in the Kingdom.
The first public cinema screening – featuring Black Panther – took place in Riyadh in April.
