Hundreds of civilians in the Eastern Ghouta region are helplessly crushed under the heavy strides taken by both sides of the Syrian civil war. The Russian-backed Syrian army recently pounded air strikes on more than hundred civilians despite UNs continuous call for ceasefire.
The bombing campaign headed by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad killed more than 500 people in just a week’s duration while a mass of distressed civilians were left behind seeking immediate medical aid. Nevertheless, Syria and its allies – Russia and Iran – blatantly blame international sponsors like the US for deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov audaciously and barefacedly stated that the 30-day ceasefire agreed upon for the eastern Ghouta region in the U.N. Security Council, would only come into effect once all sides involved in the conflict unanimously agree on the manner of its implementation.
On the contrary, the U.N. Secretary-general demanded for the immediate effectuation of the 30-day ceasefire in Syria. Antonio Guterres’ concerns regarding the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta grew looking at the continuity of deadly bombardment by the Damascus regime, forcing him to call for an aggressive decision.
“Security Council resolutions are only meaningful if they are effectively implemented. That is why I expect the resolution to be immediately implemented and sustained. Eastern Ghouta cannot wait. It is high time to stop this hell on earth,” said Guterres at the opening of the 37th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Geneva.
President Bashar al-Assad probably couldn’t conform to the opposition of armed groups that controlled the last suburbs of Damascus and rubbished US’s claim of Russian and Syrian warplanes targeting civilians despite an already mounting death toll.
In fact, forces loyal to President Bashar and allies – Russia and Iran – blamed the armed groups and their alleged ‘international sponsors’ of worsening the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
Meanwhile, US is just using its influence in the military, political and economic sector to abuse regional rivalries around the world. Supposedly, this is being done in order to keep powerful nations exhausted in fighting one another instead of coming together in full force to undermine the US.
